The truth is that I have been into health and fitness since I was 12 years old. And a donut lover for even longer than that. The summer that I turned 12 was pivotal in my life. I started watching the Richard Simmons show and I was hooked. I began exercising outside of school PE classes and started experimenting on my own in the kitchen with healthy recipes. The life I laid out for myself that summer, stuck. I’m not saying that I didn’t eat junk food like every other teenager, I did. But that is when I learned that there can be both if I leaned more toward making healthy choices most of the time. This carried on for years and even crept its way into my career when I was given the opportunity to work with bariatric patients prior to and after their weight loss surgeries.
So why do I bring all this up?
Because today is National Donut Day. And as much as running, exercising and eating right is a part of my life, so has this favorite childhood food. Jelly donuts will ALWAYS stir up fond memories of yesteryear for me. Memories of New York (I was born there), my mom, my grandmother, and little pink bakery boxes tied with string. I love that weeks like this I am literally a walking oxymoron. With Running Day and Donut Day all occurring in one week, I feel like I get to celebrate the things that stir up a lot of wonderful memories for me. A lifetime of them really. And that is pretty cool.
Well, I hope you all have a day where you love the life you have created and get to eat a donut too!!!
Happy National Running Day everyone!
Well, I hope you all have a day where you celebrate your passion!!!
It makes me giggle every year. National Running Day and National Donut Day are both THIS week. Appreciation for my favorite pastime AND my favorite vice are all contained in ONE week. How cool is THAT?!?!
Well, I hope you all have the best week EVER!!!
Happy National Running Day everyone!!!
When I was 15 years old my running aspirations were sidelined by a back injury. It took me years to get going again. Decades to have the courage to really try. Ten years ago I asked God for the strength to run just 1/8 of a mile. I was scared. I knew what I really asking for. It was huge. Bigger than I had dared to dream in years. But I was finally ready to take that chance, even if it meant failing. As it turned out, I was able to run that 1/8 mile that day … and it changed the course of my life. For the better.
Along with National Running Day I am happy to also celebrate, this week, the forth anniversary of my first race. A 5K that meant the world to me. I knew it was just the beginning. But I under estimated that “beginning”. It was the start of so much more than I ever dreamt possible.
Running and racing have given me many gifts far beyond the reach of health and fitness. I have found genuine friendships with some of the most supportive, encouraging and inspiring people I have ever known. I now also get to live each day knowing that I am capable of achieving things that I once never had the courage to dream.
Well, I hope you all have a day where you celebrate living a life beyond your wildest dreams!!!
So if you haven’t heard already, it’s … NATIONAL DONUT DAY!!!
I started celebrating last night, so far consuming 4 donuts … and the donut eating hours that remain in this day are still aplenty, HA!
I love my friends. I’ve gotten messages asking me if I wanted to go get donuts today and wishing me a happy day. They get me 🙂 Yes, donuts are MY THING. Well, one of my THINGS anyway.
Today is about celebrating my vice, my special childhood memory, and the balance I try to keep between being a nutrition/fitness junkie and a normal woman … OK fine, normal-ish.
I absolutely love that National Donut Day and National Running Day are just two days apart. Seriously, I don’t know WHO made up that calendar but I must be a distant relative, HA! A friend of mine said to me that the only thing that could make this week better for me was to have my birthday sandwiched between the two. Could you imagine?!?!? LOVE IT!!!
Well, I hope you all have a day where your world is pretty darn near perfect!!!
Happy National Running Day! AAAAAND guess what I did today?!?! OK, nevermind, that never works on a blog, HA! I will just tell you!
I logged my fastest mile EVER on my Garmin!
Well, since I’ve been tracking my pace the past few years anyway. It was an 8:07 … OMG! I don’t ever run that fast, nor do I feel the need to! But I didn’t feel like I was going to die when I did, so WOOT! I feel my pace is coming back, slowly but surely. Patience woman, PATIENCE! Thankfully my body gives me cues that it is getting stronger and I’m feeling some of those signs now. One being when my ankles and Achilles start to itch from the inside out. Ummm … EW … but YAY! Running can be so gross and yet so wonderful all at the same time!
Well, I hope you all have a day where you get to celebrate what you love even the really icky creepy parts!!!
