I remember our first night together in the hospital. He was so tiny. Precious. My son. George Alexander Henry, III. His name seemed so big for him. I am not sure if I was wrought with hormonal changes or caught up in the moment with my new baby boy, but I was overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with thoughts of what I wanted for him. He would one day be a man … and I was bewildered at how I was to mother him so that he would develop the qualities I felt were important for a man to possess. It scared me. Could I be the mother to him that he needed to become that strong man I envisioned?
That night I cried for him. I prayed for him. And I made promises to him. I made peace with my fears and I trusted that my love for him would be my guide … and that faith would take care of the rest.
Today is George’s 16th birthday. We have come a long way since that first night in the hospital. That little baby boy that I held all those years ago has turned into quite a young man. Sure, he can be that moody teen that just wants to be left alone, but he is so much more than that. He is good, kind, gentle, thoughtful and loving. Don’t get me wrong. He is NO WHIMP. His 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do proves that! But he has an air of sensitivity that surrounds him. He thinks of others and has a level of compassion that astounds me. He is thankful, humble and genuine. And he makes me so proud.
Watching him grow into who he is today has been such a joy. No matter how big or how old he gets, or where life may take him, he will always be my little baby boy. I will always remember that night in the hospital … and smile, knowing that everything turned out just right.
Happy Birthday George!!! I love so very much!!!
Well, I hope you all have a day where you celebrate things turning out better than you could have ever imagined!!!
